Lindenbaum Orchestra

The Lindenbaum Festival was established to bring together young musicians from South and North Korea to form a unified orchestra, promoting cross-border collaboration and communication through music.

Although North Korean participation has not yet been possible, the Festival has continued its mission through annual peace concerts each August at Camp Greaves in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The orchestra has performed at major cultural events, including the opening ceremony of the 2016 DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, and has collaborated internationally through joint concerts with the Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra (2017) and the Yale Symphony Orchestra (2018). In 2019, the Festival also invited the National Children’s Choir to perform in the DMZ.

In 2018, under the direction of Toshiyuki Shimada, Music Director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble performed three works symbolizing peace at Camp Greaves, a former U.S. military base located approximately two kilometers south of the DMZ. The performance brought together musicians from the Yale Symphony Orchestra and artists from Korea and abroad, featuring Candide (1956) by Leonard Bernstein, Fence-a-Dance (2018) by Tod Machover (MIT Media Lab), and Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”

These initiatives highlight the organization’s commitment to cultural diplomacy and its vision of a future unified North and South Korean orchestra performing in the DMZ.
